Play area and pieces
Chess is a game of logic and tactics that can be played by two oponents. The play area upon which the game takes place is called a chessboard and is made up of 64 squares (also known as positions) of two alternating colours.
Every row is numbered (from 1 to 8), while every column is attributted aletter (from A to H). Every position thus has two coordinates. For example… a1 is in the lower left corner, while b2 is the next position on the diagonal.
The board is set into place so that a player will always have a light coloured square on the very bottom right of his view.
There are 32 chess pieces – half are light, and half are dark (also known as white and black). These are of the same type and both players are alotted the same number of pieces of one type as follows:
1 King
1 Queen (yes, you only get one)
2 Rooks
2 Knights
2 Bishops
8 Pawn
And here they are in their respective starting positions:
Every position on rows 2 and 7 are occupied by pawns. Rooks take up the corners of the board with knights and bishops beeing distributed respectively on the next most central position. The Queen must always be placed on a square of it's own colour, hence it will start off on a dark square when playing « black », and a light square when playing « white »
