Chess Game History

The name « Chess » comes from ancient persion where it designated a ruler of sorts, nowadays known as a Shah.
Although there is no deffinitive archaeological evidence as to the ancestor of chess it appears that the earliest forms of the game appeared in northwestern India during the reign of the Gupta emperors with Infantry, the Elephant, and chariots as the main weapons of war. The first historical records only appear a few hundred years later in Persia, where the game was called chatrang

Evolution toward modern chess

The game saw a number of changes once it reached Europe, in order for players to recognise features of their own culture. The structure of the game saw the biggest changes during the Rennaiscence, when the pawn began to move two squares forward on its' first move and the Vizier changed its' name to Queen. The role and importance of the queen would make what we now call chess also be named Queen's Chess.
The last modern rule of the game was put into place when, during the 19th century a stalemate came to be considered a draw.
